Oral Appliance Therapy
Oral appliances are a treatment option for patients suffering with obstructive sleep apnea. They function by advancing tissue in a patient’s airway in order to prevent it from collapsing and causing obstructive events.
Oral appliances are divided in two categories: Mandibular Advancement Devices and Tongue Stabilizing Devices.
Mandibular advancement devices are specially designed mouthpieces that advance the jaw bone forward. By doing so, the base of the tongue is also moved forward, preventing it from falling back during sleep and causing obstructions. Properly tailored devices can be manually advanced to cater to each patient and their unique anatomy. Patients must have teeth in order for these devices to be effective.
Tongue stabilizing devices are effective for patients without teeth. They function by creating a suction seal on the tip of the tongue, preventing it from falling back during sleep.
Oral appliances are effective at treating obstructive sleep apnea, and are an underused treatment option in the field of sleep apnea therapy. They are highly portable and can complement a patient’s treatment regimen for use during long airflights, travel or overnight trips.
