Tonsillectomy

For cases of chronic or recurrent sore throats due to tonsil infections, a tonsillectomy is an effective procedure designed to remove the source of infection – the tonsils. Following a successful tonsillectomy, patients can expect a decrease in the severity and frequency of their infections, improving their quality of life.
Tonsillectomies are performed under general anesthesia for adults and children alike. The entire surgery is performed through the mouth, therefore, the patient does not have any visible incisions or bruising after surgery.

The post-operative course for a tonsillectomy results in a painful sore throat for about 7-10 days. It is not uncommon for patients to lose approximately 15 pounds the first week after surgery as they are on a liquid diet. Patients are provided proper pain medication after surgery to assist in the post-operative healing.
