Thyroidectomy

A thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure designed to remove all or part of the thyroid gland. Indications for removal include enlarged thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer and goiter among others. It is not uncommon for individuals to have cysts and nodules in the thyroid gland, therefore, a cautious approach to surgical removal is required, as not every cyst or nodule requires removal.
A biopsy of the thyroid is an effective screening tool for nodules of a certain size. In cases of benign findings, observation is a proper approach. However, in cases of finding suspicious for cancer, it is important to consider surgical intervention.
