Sinus Surgery(FESS)

Patients suffering from long term nasal congestion, sinus pressure and impaired smell may have nasal polyps. Nasal polyps are collections of edematous structures that result from underlying inflammation that can be caused by allergy.

Nasal Polyps block airflow, transmission of smell and sinus drainage, decreasing the quality of life for the affected patient.

Often patients suffering from these symptoms have tried multiple medications(steroids, sprays, antibiotics) without success, and have decided to “live with” their symptoms. One reason medications may not yield relief is the volume of nasal polyps is so great, it is difficult for medication to penetrate.

Proper ENT examination can result in accurate location of the polyp disease and allow for precise treatment. For example, in office CT scans shown above reveal a normal patient on the left with no evidence of nasal polyps; the patient on the right has significant polyp disease noted by the grey areas in the sinus region.

The mainstay of treatment when medication has failed is surgical removal of the obstructing polyps followed by proper medication to prevent recurrence.

The principle behind in office sinus surgery is to remove polyps and other anatomic obstructions that are impairing adequate sinus drainage. By improving sinus drainage and restoring proper sinus ventilation, the natural clearance of sinus secretions is improved. This allows future infections to clear much faster and also provides a route for topical medication to reach the sinuses for maintenance therapy. The entire procedure is performed through the nose using cameras and sinus instruments; therefore, the patient does not have any visible incisions or bruising after surgery
